This sundial reminds the epoch of the origin of Russian instrument making. Young noble gentlemen were assembled in the fencing hall of the Suharevsky tower. Except young tsar the members of so called Neptune society were Prokopovich, Bruce, Menshikov, Apraksin, and Gordon. Many years later on the base of this society the State School of Navigation was founded. The first teachers were Englishmen. The names of Neptune society members and the names of the School of Navigation are etched on the sundial. In the centre of it the facsimile signature of the first Russian astronomer and instrument maker Jacob Bruce is etched.
